Hello, this is David Quick from Total Cover IT ®, and today I want to share some information about tech support scams.
Just imagine that you’re sitting at your computer, just minding your own business doing your work, and you just get a call out of the blue out of nowhere from a supposedly well-known company, or maybe they are claiming to be from an IT company. And they say that they detect a problem on your computer, and they need to come in and fix it. So, believing that they are a legitimate IT company, or a legitimate well-known company, you go ahead and grant them access to your computer to troubleshoot the problem.
So, they go about pretending that they’re running diagnostics, troubleshooting the issue. But in the meantime, they’re loading malware on your system, and doing all kinds of other potentially malicious activity. You don’t know what’s going on because you think that they’re legitimate. And now, your system may have been totally compromised as a result of the caller doing the very thing that they claimed that they were protecting you from.
The bottom line is, if you get one of these calls, that they’re claiming that they’re from a well-known company or that they’re an IT consultant, or something of that nature, just hang up. No legitimate company is ever going to call you unsolicited about a computer problem.
In addition, you may get pop ups on your screen that say there’s a problem on your system and to call “this” number for tech support. That’s also a scam. If you call that number, something very similar is going to happen, because you’re going to get a supposedly legitimate company and they’re going to do the “cleanup”. And that’s not going to be the case as they’re going to totally compromise your system. So, if you get one of those pop ups, don’t call the number that’s displayed. Don’t click any links. Instead, call your IT resource, the one that you know and trust.
The bottom line is that there are scams for tech support. Be wary of unsolicited calls, or strange pop ups on your computer wanting you to call them.
