Hello, this is David Quick from Total Cover IT®, and today we are going to talk about public Wi-Fi. Public Wi-Fi is so easy and convenient. You find it at airports, you find it at hotels, even at your preferred restaurant. So simple easy to pull out your mobile device and get online with public Wi-Fi, you’re good to go to get some work done.
The problem with that is that public Wi-Fi is not very secure. Because it’s an open network, anyone with a device within range can connect to it. And someone with a malicious intent potentially can access your data. Worse yet, hackers can set up a fake public Wi Fi network. Typically, it’ll have a name that is similar to the real thing. So, when you pull out your mobile device, and connect it to what you think is the public Wi Fi, that really is the fake Wi Fi. It’s game over. It’s game over because now you are on the hacker’s Wi Fi network, so they can see everything that you do online. Scary huh?
So how do you address this? I know it’s very easy and convenient to go on public Wi-Fi, but whenever possible, do not use public Wi-Fi. What you can use instead is a mobile hotspot. A mobile hotspot is like a wireless router steps that you can take with you wherever you go. So, it’s portable. So, you have your own portable wireless router.
It’s easy and convenient. Very convenient. Just pull it out. Connect with your mobile device and you’re good to go. Just like the public Wi-Fi, except that it is far more secure because this mobile hotspot is dedicated to you. You get these from your preferred wireless carrier. Just make sure that your data plan can support it.
If you have any questions about any of this, please feel free to reach out to me. I’m David Quick from Total Cover IT® where our “I” is on your “T”®. Thanks for watching.
